just out of curiousity: what were/are the bad variations? i thought we
used vanilla mips1 (sgi o32, not n32, but otherwise vanilla).

There are some bugs wrt 64-bit support in how signal-state is saved,
introduced by some careless people; but that's all I was aware of.
