When you use C (and even then, it should find ld rather quickly right from
$PATH).  When you use C++, it has many more purposes, including the
implementation of -frepo (and in egcs 1.2, several more -f options).

However, it will be needed in short order as people start assuming "egcs ==
has -frepo".
