...but binutils is a rather good student.  ;)

I have done most of the work to get gas to understand our a.out (i.e. 
I think it does the right thing, but I must read the documentation to
make sure I haven't missed anything, and do some heavy testing.)

I guess there are somewhat more work to do on ld, but I don't expect 
it to be too hard.
