It's probably easier to hack egcs, since the snapshots before the release
did the right thing with respect to our our gas (I know that egcs-971114
was OK, and there was only minor changes between it and the release)
but, as I understand it, the egcs people doesn't think it's worth the
trouble to make egcs work with too old binutils.
