Don't know about this particular problem (you made sure your custom kernel
config has everything that is in GENERIC.MP?).

But just for the record, if you don't realy need 1.6, I've updated the 
i386 MP branch and syssrc (-current) yesterday and everything build & works
just fine.

But be carefull, -current libc is incompatible with 1.6 kernels.
