I see that the Makefile says not for Darwin so that makes it sound

On the other hand it uses null mounts which I'm not sure is a Linux

YMMV. I use it on NetBSD and Linux, and have in the past used it on
SunOS. Nowadays I have too much customisation required and so ended up
writing my own for SunOS.
It's correct that Darwin is unsupported. Sandbox support on Darwin over
the years has been incredibly frustrating, and Apple keep
breaking^Wchanging things. Currently my most stable setup (the one that
posts daily bulk builds to pkgsrc-bulk@) involves MacFUSE, bindfs, and
NFS mounts.
