The only thing I'm wary of is any potential issues on platforms that have not yet tried building it. I'm known to be pretty conservative, so if folks aren't bothered about that and want to fixup things as we hit them then go ahead, otherwise we can introduce a per-platform _OPSYS_SUPPORTS_MKTOOLS flag and enable on at least Darwin, Linux, NetBSD, and SunOS.
