OK, thanks for all the input on various ld flags for setting the rpath. Taylor reminded me of the more general way of solving this, i.e., using COMPILER_RPATH_FLAG. As a result, I propose the attached patch. I have tested this on MacOS, but expect it to work everywhere unless there is a bigger issue with defining that variable. Comments still welcome.
