The current migration instructions leave references to /var/db/pkg
in the refcount files, which I believe is what martin is referring to.
There's been a lot of discussions about this change outside of the
mailing list where this came up, which you would have missed out on if
you weren't following IRC and various web forums.

I think erroring was the wrong decision, and that's maya's idea to have
seamless backwards compatibility using /var/db/pkg on old installs and
/usr/pkg/pkgdb only on new installs is the right way forward. While I
recognise the rationale for this change and that it was already agreed
upon a long time ago, I think the problems were not anticipated - several
users have had to reinstall due to this change. It should not have been
pulled up in this state.
