Using pkgsrc gcc

How do you make a package use gcc from pkgsrc ?

Tried setting the following but it is still using /usr/bin/gcc.

USE_PKGSRC_GCC= yes
USE_NATIVE_GCC= no
GCC_REQD+=      8
