I have existence proof that it can succeed, but I've also
experienced (not on i386, I think) that it bombs, e.g. you have
the "dead lock detected" in the shared library loader which we've
not figured out what triggers.  I don't think I've seen this
particular failure mode in my builds.

$ uname -rms
NetBSD 8.0_STABLE i386
$ 
$ pkg_info | grep rust
rust-1.36.0         Safe, concurrent, practical language
$
