According to

it uses msgfmt --xml and msgfmt --desktop.
I can find that in pan-0.145/Makefile.am:
pan.desktop: pan.desktop.in
$(AM_V_GEN)$(MSGFMT) --desktop --template $< -d $(top_srcdir)/po -o $@
[...]
pan.appdata.xml: pan.appdata.xml.in
$(AM_V_GEN)$(MSGFMT) --xml --template $< -d $(top_srcdir)/po -o $@
I suppose I can do without those files (I don't use any "desktop"
anyway), but it would make the package incomplete for others.
