Ok.  There are a lot of unrelated changes in those diffs regarding
Java, libxml2, French character sets etc.  Could you produce a patch
which _just_ has the PKGGNUDIR changes and g* handling, and I'll
gladly push it through our bulktest tree to check for fallout.

In the future it'd be much easier to review proposed changes if they
are in their own email thread and only solve one issue at a time.  So
far this thread has tried to resolve about 6 different things, and for
people like me it can be really difficult to keep track and logically
separate the discussion items.
