Similar statistics in pkgsrc land might be useful.
Or this may get you thinking about trying to make things better, one
package at a time... :)
There's an idea about teaching the compiler to recognize some "bad" code,
and while building the bad code to actually replace it with good code[1].
(Or was that good & bad reversed? :-)
Maybe that should be done (while thwacking the software authors, too)
