The usual suspects are:

 - Unable to find the gcc binary, setting GCCBASE (in your case to
   /usr/gcc/4.3) can help here.

 - The output of gcc -v doesn't match a known string and so pkgsrc
   cannot determine the version.

 - A stray USE_PKGSRC_GCC=yes is set somewhere.

You'd need to dig through mk/compiler/ to see exactly what is
going on in your case.

The best fix would be to add:

  GCCBASE=              /usr/gcc/4.3
  USE_NATIVE_GCC=       yes

to your mk.conf, and then ensure all work directories are purged
before retrying.
