As the MAINTAINER in question, I would like to point out that
(1) I converted nearly all of my packages to DESTDIR some time ago.
(2) That's because joerg@ took the time to explain what to do and why.
(3) qmail is a less trivial conversion, but I intend to take care of it.
(4) joerg@'s proposal doesn't bother me all that much, but I do like
gdt@'s better.
Making DESTDIR support mandatory is neither a new idea nor a big
change, but rather the culmination of a long series of small changes
begun long ago. Given how much work has been done toward this goal
already, it seems fair that we pitch in a bit to finish the job.
