This is cool. What if you lay out the surfaces like so:

r c
This way you maintain the construction set and get readability in both 2-D and
3-D representations (the different colors for 'pkg' and 'src' surfaces make
this look better than it does in ASCII... 8-) ). And if the whole thing is
rotated counter-clockwise by PI/4, but the letters remain vertical, something
like:
s c
p g r
k
you actually improve readability for 3-D w/o hurting for 2-D, IMO.
