Fine, I must have missed that:
  $ bmake.old -V MAKE_VERSION
  bmake-3.1.12 20050710
  $ bmake -V MAKE_VERSION
  bmake-20051105 build-20061224

The former version of bmake cannot deal correctly with .USE while the
latter can.
