It was two days old, so i guess id does not harm. That's why i was  
quick to change this (yes, probably too quick ;-) ), to provide a  
consistent interface.

I have nothing against that. It took inspiration in  
bdb.buildlink3.mk, and saw that BDB_DEFAULT is defined in this file  
and not in default/mk.conf. It looked a good idea to keep this  
default definition close to where is is used. Since TEX_DEFAULT is  
intended to be set by the user, it's probably better to move it's  
definition in default/mk.conf
