Compiling pkgsrc/textproc/py-libxml2 on my Linux/x86 systems fails like

gcc -pthread -shared ${LDFLAGS} -L/usr/lib -Wl,-R/usr/lib
-L/usr/local/pkg/lib -Wl,-R/usr/local/pkg/lib -DXXX -L/usr/local/pkg/lib
-Wl,-R/usr/local/pkg/lib -L/usr/lib -Wl,-R/usr/lib
-Wl,-R/usr/local/pkg/lib/python2.4/config -O3 -march=pentium
-I/usr/local/pkg/include -I/usr/include
-I/usr/local/pkg/include/python2.4 -I/usr/local/pkg/include
-I/usr/include -I/usr/local/pkg/include/python2.4
build/temp.linux-i586-2.4/libxml.o build/temp.linux-i586-2.4/types.o
-L/usr/local/pkg/lib -lxml2 -lm -lz -o
build/lib.linux-i586-2.4/ -DXXX -L/usr/local/pkg/lib
-Wl,-R/usr/local/pkg/lib -L/usr/lib -Wl,-R/usr/lib
gcc: ${LDFLAGS}: No such file or directory
error: command 'gcc' failed with exit status 1
*** Error code 1

It looks like ${LDFLAGS} does not get expanded at some point.
Do others experience the same issue? On Darwin I find this package to
compile without a problem.
