That's it!

When I move mk.conf out of the way, "make update" works!

   So I moved mk.conf back, and commenting out lines. When I comment out
the line:

.sinclude "/usr/pkg/share/mk/optimize_gcc.mk"

   ..it works! Turns out it's optimize_gcc.mk which breaks the package
deinstallation somehow.
