I notice that every O.S. on all of my machines always has both
gtk1 and gtk2 pulled in as dependencies.  Is there any reason to
keep gtk1 these days?  What advantage does it have over gtk2?

My impression is that gtk1 is used mostly by obsolete gnome 1.4*
programs.
