PREFER_NATIVE=MesaLib

may help.

I'm in the process of attempting to scrub all redundant libraries from
pkgsrc, finding some rough edges in the process...  even though Xft2 and
freetype2 are available natively in X 4.4.0, a few packages need newer
versions.
