It would need to be a very old platform, since C89 has exactly the same
kind of "stay out" language that C99 has (as I can now check, being at
home). Personally, having worked on programs that need to work on
somehat different (not even "very different") platforms, I have become
very impatient with non-standard programs (and compilers) and I show
them no mercy at all. Only K&R 1 seems rather vague about errno (can't
find it in the index or table of contents).
