This is unusual. Extracting the archive should create a directory or
link "work" in /usr/pkgsrc/security/p5-Digest-MD5/.

Is the filesystem where /usr/pkgsrc/ resides mounted read-only?
Do you have set the variable WRKOBJDIR in /etc/mk.conf? What does
"make show-var VARNAME=WRKOBJDIR" say if you execute this in
security/p5-Digest-MD5?
