One thing I've noticed recently (don't know if this is a change or not) is 
that gtk2 apps seem to be very greedy in the number of open files they use.  
I've bumped the default per process open file descriptors limit on my systems 
to 128 and for the X server bumped it to 256 because apps were definitely 
hitting the 64 descriptor limit.
