It appears this has since been fixed.  The bulk build version of
pkgsrc (from sometime on the 12th March) exhibits strange behaviour:

	-> cd pkgsrc/x11/gnome-libs/
	-> bmake show-var VARNAME=USE_BUILTIN.xpm
	no
	-> cd ../../graphics/xpm/
	-> bmake show-var VARNAME=USE_BUILTIN.xpm
	yes

making xpm a dependancy even though it's marked broken for already
being installed in the base system.  Current works fine:

	-> cd pkgsrc/x11/gnome-libs/
	-> make show-var VARNAME=USE_BUILTIN.xpm  
	yes

Thanks to whoever fixed it.
