Didn't work for my case:

fast creating man/Makefile
fast creating po/Makefile
config.status: creating config.h
config.status: executing depfiles commands
===> Building for kbiff-3.7
cd . && /bin/ksh ./config.status Makefile
config.status: error: invalid argument: Makefile
gmake: *** [Makefile] Error 1
*** Error code 2
