Could someone please document precisely what, besides current
bootstrap and mk.conf settings:

USE_GCC3= YES
SED=/usr/pkg/bin/nbsed

is required to build under solaris? I can't get past most of the
very low-level packages such as gettext (on MacOS also). Stand-alone
packages generally build on, but I can't move far beyond trivial.
