No security reason I know of.

I assume you mean libcrypt from GNU libc. (There is not glibc for NetBSD
pkgsrc yet.)

I have it in my glibc-2.2.5 package. I need to send-pr the pkgsrc for it,
but I need to clean it up so it uses CONF_FILES and also to integrate
Momchil Velikov's patches to work under NetBSD. (I only use glibc under
Linux.)
