I cannot comment on the suggestion you made, but maybe make sure that the
perl pkg and maybe some pkgs depending on it don't break on the machines
where you have access to.

Also, posting complete patches here increases chances of people dropping
them in and doing a 'make install' (or whatever) on their platform.
