You should check first to see that you are using the CUPS lpr command,
and not the system one in /usr/bin/lpr.  If it's a CUPS-related problem,
it would be more helpful to ask on the CUPS mailing list.

BTW, the pkgsrc version of CUPS is at 1.1.4, which is vastly superior
to the 1.0 releases of CUPS.
