I've no problems with doing that, but ...

Why September 1999? I would prefer to do it in years i.e.
pkg-CHANGES.1997, pkg-CHANGES.1998, pkg-CHANGES.1999 and pkg-CHANGES-2000

Why the name "pkg-CHANGES.prev"? See above.
