Changes to the NetBSD Packages Collection in October 1999

The NetBSD Packages Collection celebrated its second birthday in
October, and it also passed the 1000 package mark during that month -
thanks to everyone who has helped make this possible.  We also managed
to find and fix many bugs in the Packages Collection itself, in
preparation for a forthcoming CD.

We made changes this month so that it's possible to use real Motif
libraries with pkgsrc, as well as lesstif ones, and also made the
calculation of checksums on the patch files more efficient and
comprehensive.  New packages added to the collection include: 
asclock, cfengine, crack, fortify, gif2png, jitterbug, kde audio and
toys packages, lavaps, libungif, lukemftp, mp, nqc (Mindstorms-fans,
please note), sh-utils, speakfreely, wmx, xbatt, and xmindpath.  The
HFS (Apple Macintosh) packages have been reorganised.  Updated packages
include:  arena, asapm, bochs, catdoc, elm, enlightenment and related
packages, fnlib, freetype, gd, gensolpkg, gif2png, giflib, gindent,
glib, gnome (thanks, as ever, Matthias), gnumeric, htdig, imlib,
libglade, libslang, libwww, libxml, magicpoint, mtv, plotutils, pth,
ted (thanks, Dan), tgif, tiff, tkinfo, windowmaker, and xscreensaver.

There were many conflicting votes for "Package of the Month" - Hubert
Feyrer suggested lavaps, an interesting variation on load monitors,
and Steve Woodford recommended ethereal, a very impressive network
analyser, which has been around for a while but is still incredibly
useful.  Whilst my personal vote goes to ethereal as well, (I find
lavaps "cute", but not very useful), I'd also like to put in a word
for enlightenment, and, specifically, eterm, which I have found myself
installing and using on all my machines.
