I think you should set OBJMACHINE=1 in /etc/mk.conf. This will give you
"work.${MACHINE}" directories, and the described mixup can't happen.
I'm using this on the same setup here as you do (NFS server with clients
compiling).

Maybe check out pkgsrc/mk/mk.conf.example for some other ideas as to put
into /etc/mk.conf.
