IC...  

How do you plan to do the installation of such a package, extract into a
staging area as it's done right now, or directly extract into place?

I'd prefer the further as it allows to easily back out things if something
goes wrong. Which is usually detected in the "extract to staging area"
phase, rather than in the "move into place" phase. Think about conflicting
packages, aborted FTP downloads, ...
