have you tried fiddling with the cpuflags to gcc and recompiling
libcrypto?  It helped a lot on sparc, and I have heard similar speedups
in motorola land from mac68k guys.

VAX went through this about a year ago: much bemoaning the slowness and
hogginess of -current...  there were some metrics taken (same config
file, different kernel versions,) but I don't know if anything really
came of it.  with identical configuration files, the kernels are
bloating.
