I trust you intend to verify these changes work before you commit
them? Do you have the hardware necessary to test changes to STRIP?

Is _anybody_ in possession of the relevant hardware? I have one radio,
but it hasn't been powered up since I last moved house, at least 2
years.

If (as I suspect) nobody is using strip, maybe we should mothball it
(preferably in a last-known-working state)?
