Yes, he's used GENERIC_ISDN, i.e. the device is there already. What
I wondered about is whether the information set up by ifconfig is
lost on the start of isdnd.

...which has answered itself by a second, closer look on the data
on the website and some talk with my friend. All is fine (now) and
running fine, too, without any restarts whatsoever. It seems 
his old lurking ifconfig.ippp0 file together with a not exactly
tuned rc.conf caused the problems.

Well, thx anyways from two happy nbsd users :)
