   I don't understand why the ppp link addresses were chosen
   within the netmask of the ethernet

Address space conservation; otherwise you'd tend to burn 4 addresses
on a /30 for the PPP link.  It's also administratively simpler because
you the next hop router know about the host/router doing ppp.

It's also a poor-man's mobile ip; a mobile system can end up using the
same ip address when directly on the ethernet or when dialed up via
ppp.
