Well, apparently Matt located the source of the problem.  I noticed
the change in source-changes and tried it out.  Things seem to be
running much more smoothly with that workaround.

I did notice that this code is present in the 1.3 branch, too.
I don't know (and don't have an easy way to test) if it's also
problematic there.
