This is a matter of where the valuable programming time goes, to make it
easier to use the old protocol versions, or to be able to use NFS
with a sound security model.

Nowadays there is a demand for the latter, that's why NFSv4 appeared.

As soon as you need security, the performance of v3 becomes irrelevant.
Otherwise, it is better with v4, or with v3, depending on the setup
and the usage pattern.
