And none of mine do - but all of mine require AF_TIMER sockets, which I
don't see NetBSD hurrying to adopt.

I don't think any one person's use cases are a useful guide.  I
actually don't think even "a large majority of users need it" or "a
large majority of systems need it" are justification for this; examples
of optional things which I think should remain optional despite being
very popular are options INET and pseudo-device pty.
