You should try hdaudio instead of azalia. Either remove the comments from the relevant lines in a netbsd-5 (branch) GENERIC or just temporarily boot a -current MONOLITHIC kernel.
Running a -current kernel or netbsd-5 kernel from the latest autobuilds might also address your other concerns.
