Anyone want to float an opinion on the workaround patch I floated for
PR 37915? It is gross, but it does work; meanwhile a full locking
cleanup like ad's been working on is not really suitable for pullup to
-5, and may not be ready in time either.

(The patch is appended to the PR.)
