We should definitively add support for openhal - so users with hardware
supported by it can use that.

Unfortunately the supported hardware differs a lot, especially for newer
cards.

We should also clearly document this whole mess in the man page. And we
should add a web page guiding users to select wlan hardware - I have tried to
find alternatives to atheros cards recently and got a lot of differing
opinions in response.
