I disagree (but it is a minor nit):

The kernel version needs to support the binary codec (that we don't have
yet), and (as I've been told) sometimes the xml parser, as some apple related
disk image vnd drivers might need it.

But otherwise: yes, there is no point in choice for the userland<->kernel
communication.
