In general - doing research work in operating systems for a PhD. Whether
I'll start from (almost) scratch or some code base (NetBSD being the
most likely candidate) for device drivers - I haven't decided yet.
I want to have a fast development cycle - rebooting isn't included in
that :) And I want to develop my OS on the real hardware. Current SW
used for development (e.g. like vmware or bochs) doesn't support various
SCSI controllers and high-speed network cards that I have available.
I.e. I can't test the driver integration under bochs or vmware.
So when I return to debugging device drivers (imported from NetBSD most
probably) on my own OS on the real iron - I'm back to square one with
compile - test - reboot cycle.

| The idea itsself sounds interesting, tho I am really xen-friendly :-)
|
I have nothing against xen, but my end goal is not virtualization.
