See kloader(4).  The man page is only in -current, but it's present
since 2002, iirc.

It's implemented on hpc* and game consoles ports, where "going through
the firmware" effectively means booting another OS.  The amount of
machine dependent code is relatively small, so supporting it on other
platforms should not be that much work.
