That's (in my understanding) what GEOM is - an artificial layer introduced
to create pluggable, highly configurable slicing/partitioning modules with
some autoconfiguration magic. The crypto stuff just hitchhikes ;-)

I would call it a kernel implementation of wedges (but of course this is
an oversimplification).
